  • As a furry...any anthropomorphized animal character can be considered furry. Zootopia and Robin Hood both easily fall under that category. Pretty much anything from Lola bunny to the aristocats could be considered furry in a sense because they are all animals with human features, regardless of how extreme it is.

  • As I see it: a Fursona is wat the person needs to represent. Sometimes, they need to conect themselfs with something beoutiful/sexy/x Sometimes, they need to evoke an original character that represents something. Either themselfs or ther love for the furry or x. Wat defines a Fursona is that is the "go to". Wat you feel that is the most natural transiction and/or objective.

  • The fursona scale is absurdly broad. It can be directly being effectively a smart animal to Cat boy. There is also absurdity like Aeromorphs, those are a thing. It just keeps going. I though I tend to hit a "WHAT IS THE POINT THEN?" if the furry in question is a human with a weaksauce snout.

I have three currently representing different parts of myself but the main one I tend to draw is my tiger fursona because, well mainly so I never forget about them I guess? I haven’t heard from them in years so who knows what happened but I hope they are okay wherever they are. Anywho my tiger is a bit more fit then me, but I’m working on that! I also have a small fox fursona representing my shy side and a lion that is a bit cold and logical representing that side of me that just is done with peoples stupidity as harsh as that sounds ^^;

  • Absolutely no wrong way to design a fursona, it could be you as an animal, it could be an idealized version of yourself, it could be something cool that kinda resembles you, it could be a mascot for your content and not really be you at all, it could be a character you like to play, anything goes! Any species, real or imagined, and any hybrid in between! I love seeing non furries dip their toes in for fun! It's a fun thought exercise! Also a furry character is any anthropomorizied animal, which ranges from the rabbits of watership down who are just animals who speak to the lady characters of Black Sad which are basically humans with some little animal characteristics. Anthropomorphism is a very broad spectrum because it's a very loose definition of "giving human characteristics to a non human thing" You could call the brave little toaster an anthro. In fact there are certainly people in the furry fandom who have with anthro machine characters who aren't animals but it's adjacent enough of an interest that it doesn't really have it's own fandom and is sort of a subsection of furry. I've seen... so many airplanes with tits you guys... ALSO ALSO the furry fandom as it is today started in the late 70s/ early 80s ! so many. sorry for the text wall lol

  • Why fursonas look the way they do definitely differ from artist to artist (or just furry to furry, some of us can't/don't draw lol) but I definitely agree that a lot of sonas are just having fun with the concept of anthropomorphic characters in someway or another. For example Gauge (Cat in my icon) is a Cat with Ankylosaurs inspired features (face spikes, back plates, and the knobs on his tail) that I made when I was 14 in an attempt to make something that child me would've thought of as cool. He also was somewhat of an homage to my childhood cat who had died earlier that year. Asides from some minor changes over the years, I've kept him almost exactly as is since he's kinda grown to be important to me as a character. However my more recent secondary fursona Taylor is a bit different, he's just an anthro Opossum with hair and lazy looking clothes. While Gauge has more of a childlike kinda wonder to him Taylor is more adult me playfully poking fun at myself (as he is a stand-in for me in a couple comics I've made to describe my life). Opossums are known to be dirty animals that play dead under pressure, and I feel like that encapsulates aspects of myself. Anyways it's all up to you what your character looks like and you can take whatever influence from yourself that you want. Its all in good fun lol

  • As a note, anthropomorphization and personification have very similar root meanings. The first is to turn into the “form of a human”. The second is to make something be a person. IMO the two approaches for making anthro animals is “slap animal on a person” which results in things that almost always come across as furries. They act like humans, get treated like humans, and rarely show any animalistic behavior (this is the Disney Robin Hood approach. Was people, now is animal). The other direction is anthropomorphizing. That being turning an animal into something more human. This results in lingering animal behaviors and is less often considered a furry (this is the Zootopia approach). But on the whole, either can come across as a furry. And yes. If it’s sexy. It is WAY more likely to be called a furry. Bugs is a rabbit. Lola, well, people debate.

  • Things mentioned throughout the video~~ Zootopia stuff is absolutely going to fall under furry aesthetics and categories. They're anthropomorphic animals And no, clothes are not required. And No, do not think of it as a dirty thing. If you only think of it as being dirty, ew.... don't come near me. It's not a dirty thing Alex from Madagasgar would definitely fall under 'being a furry character' - he is an animal that does human like stuff. He uses his hands, stands on his back legs, dances, etc. + he thinks like a human. Regular ol' lions don't exactly do that Melman, Martin, Gloria.... Pretty much every animal in those movies are plausible to throw under the 'furry' label. I dunno 110% about every lemur that's in the film, or the Fossas, but definitely a majority of them. They do have 'human eyes' too though Now something that'd be on the edge for me is the Disney (and probably original too) Fox & Hound. I've not watched that movie in almost 20 or such years, who knows, but like, those are on some border. Because the animals talk, they have the 'human eyes' but I'm not sure on how many human things and thoughts they do and have. By definition though, because they do talk, and because they do have 'human eyes', they are fit under the 'Furry' label. Yes they're almost just like your average regular animals, but they're not quite there Plague Dogs gets closer to just being regular dogs and even if they 'talk' that might just be there so the reader understands. Same with Warrior Cats (I dunno much about Warriors though, but). Those two seem less 'Furry' than they are just animal stories Muscles and that stuff are not required in furries. I have dooooozens of anthro chracters that don't have any more muscles than your average fella tends to do, and they're not extra defined or anything. There's muscles if it fits the character (strong fighter character for example, makes sense for there to be a bit more to their arms), but it's not something that's required Same goes for hair, hair is not required. And not having hair doesn't make your character bald (and boy, personal experience, going from never drawing hair on an animal into drawing hair for 1 character and then a few more and Then another few more, into doing it the majority of the time? That. That was a transition. And it took a whiiiile) Anthro Furry characters can have 2 kinds of legs (as an over simplification). There's Digitigrade (What comes to your mind first when you think of a furry animal, the ones that stand on their toes, the way werewolves are pretty much drawn all the time) and Plantigrade (basically same articulation as a human leg). A way to split things up though, would be the 'just a straight up animal standing on their back legs -legs' like Redwall (I don't have experience on that series, but it's an example). You can have legs like that too Happy Feet I've never seen. Do they talk? I think they have animal eyes. Dunno about the dancing thing, because they do walk on 2 feet naturally and some animals do dance (look at birds, those fancy fellas) You don't have to draw cartoony eyes on a furry character. There's different styles. You can go realistic. Your anthro coffee drinking camel can be full on realistic looking despite the 80s clothes they wear, that's perfectly valid. Cartoon eyes and styles are just tht, it's a style Sexuality and 'making a design sexy' isn't required in things being furry. Furry does not mean 'sexy animal', this is a big misconception that I personally struggled a lot with back in the day, but no, the furry fandom isn't about being sexy or sexualized. There's a Lot of kids and children in the fandom. It's mostly about enjoying the concept of anthropomorphic animals and having fun, not about the horny crowd. The horny exists Everywhere. Everywhere. It's not a furry exclusive thing, nor something it requires. It doesn't make you a furry, it just makes you a horny person. I personally am Asexual, I don't rotate around that stuff, I just like the aesthetics Iconic furries, lol, well. Disney Robin Hood, Mickey Mouse, anything from the Lion King, multiple other Disney things. Looney Tunes characters. Lucario, Renamon, Tony the Tiger..... B-Batman. (Ok it's a joke, but you know, dresses up as an animal, refers to himself with his fursona, there are other people like him surrounding him (Catwoman, Penguin), and what do you know? Batman is a Furry. xD This is a joke, but I hope it made someone laugh!). I suppose Star Fox characters count. I was never into any of that stuff. Dunno about Crash Bandicoot. The Furry label can seriously include a big bunch of these characters. It doesn't 110% make them furry characters, but they could easily be. I Think Koromaru from Persona 3 isn't a Furry character, personally. I love him, but he's just a very good boi, but he doesn't talk, use his hands and doesn't have 'human eyes' Furries did exist before the internet. I'm not as well versed on this, but furries did exist prior to online culture. You have Disney movies and cartoons with animals to show proof of that. The fandom has evolved for sure, and it's more united and connected now thanks to internet~ People are able to connect to each other easier. But the fandom did exist before, there were even conventions early on, but I dunno about the years of those and maybe the conventions came after online stuff but, yeah. I don't know where I fall on the 'imagine yourself as an animal = furry' because of the old culture and native people with their stories and beliefs. Yes it could fall into the same category, but also its a whole other belief. The whole Totem and Spirit Animal stuff, it's different to them than it is to 'Furries', I feel. It's like, religion vs hobby kind of comparison? I mean, to Some it might be like a way of life, maybe some do truly believe that they're animals, maybe some get strength in believing that there's an animal that represents them and hey all the more power to you! You do you, be free, I don't mind. But it's definitely not something that is required or defines a person The whole money thing. Kids like animals. People overall like animals. Make a cartoon with animals. Boom, people like it, boom, money. It's not necessarily a furry thing, it's just, this makes money, so they do it. It's easier for people to like a dog with a sword instantly. It's a dog with a sword! But a human with a sword? A Kid with a sword? Meh, I've seen this before, I guess if the character is interesting in some way or if the world is interesting I'll pay attention. But oh you say there's a dog with a sword? I love dogs! - And it's just about as easy as that Furries can have pets. They can certainly have pets. It can be as loose as 'just an aesthetic' 'the characters are pretty much human, they just look like animals' or 'these are literally animals but they have evolved' or then it's 'just animals, not much of an evolution but they're animals'. So it can vary from 'no pets' to 'beetles and fish' to 'birds, lizards, hamsters, other small critters, horses?' to 'any animal that's not the same species as your character' or honestly even to 'anything goes'. I have a character that's basically a human, I just draw them as an anthropomorphic dog and he has a pet samoyed. The samoyed dog doesn't talk, has animal eyes and is all around just a regular ol' dog. And they don't think about it, it's not a big factor in the story. It's just the same as a human having a pet dog, nothing exactly noteworthy That's about it~~

  • I think the whole 'goat' thing might be that 'X is the goat' thing? It's a meme, I Think? People keep posting it around and I've got no idea what it means. I've fallen off the meme train and it's lost to me. I've truly become a boomer before the age of 30 As for fursona stuff This is gonna get long..... To me, I just like the animal aesthetics. There's less pressure when drawing animals. You can draw the head and face without worrying about it looking fully uncanny like some drawn human faces end up like. Stylizing is possible for both though My own just comes from childhood where me and my only friend really enjoyed all sorts of cartoons with animals in them, and the most popular anime here was SilverFang (Ginga Nagareboshi Gin) and we loved to play as the dogs in that series, eventually inevitably also creating our own characters. And a Lot of characters. We just loved drawing more and more dogs with different stuff. We would take free to use bases, put them in Ms Paint and just go wild with stuff. Prior to this point I had had 2 'alter egos' (yes, that's what I called them back then, had 0 idea as to what a 'fursona' was), and both of them were pretty much just 'hey this character looks cool and I like them, why don't I represent myself as this character as I'm drawing stuff. I can like 'be this character' in this story'. And to tie these things together, once again we were messing around with Ms Paint and bases. I randomly made another doggo with some colors I picked, and then we went out to play with my friend, picked characters we wanted to be (one of which for me was the ms paint base color I had just made, purely on the factor that it was pretty) and boom, there we go. It wasn't exactly anything too significant at the time, but through some things and for forgotten reasons, I just started to represent myself as that ms paint coloration dog. Similar personality, similar morals but cooler, that dog had certainly become the 'me in this story' as I had inserted the dog into a (complete ripoff of an already existing) story(, just that it was now all dogs rather than anime people) that I had been doodling and imagining up at that young age. The character still went with that term 'alter ego' and the previous iterations + some other characters of mine were fused into 1 in a sense in which this Current Alter Ego could transform into these other characters temporarily. But that story obviously died, good riddance, I'm kinda glad because oh god it was such a ripoff xD But the ms paint character whom I called 'Kusabana' (flower or something in Japanese, google translator wasn't so good back in the day) stuck around and I occasionally still drew the character as my representation every now and then to express my feelings (because human faces were too hard to draw and still are) Buuuuut i didn't start to call that design as my fursona for Years to come. The term 'Furry' was extremely tainted. It did not have a good association with itself. Me nor many others didn't exactly know what it meant, all we knew was the extreme minority and the adult side of the fandom and I certainly didn't want to get involved. Nope. Not at all. Eventually though, at the age of maybe 19 or 20 or something, I had honestly gotten more knowledgeable on the term 'Furry' and the community. I was never really a big part of the community, I didn't get involved, didn't look stuff up, didn't bother or care. But it kinda slowly just, fell into place that a majority of the people just like animals and the aesthetics of animal characters. Stuff looked nice, it was loose, carefree and friendly. 'Furry' didn't mean what I had previously seen it as, it was much much nicer and better than that. So while I still don't really get myself involved in whatever the fandom is doing, I'm just hanging around and minding my own business. But I don't mind if someone calls me a furry, because it's not a bad thing. And I've finally gotten to referring to my fursona as a fursona. But it's not a thing of like 'I'm an animal, woof woof awooga' nah, it's just a way for me to draw myself because human faces are still hard to draw, and why not, animals look cool and lively and it's an interesting way of getting to draw stuff. More variety~ So why not! People don't need to be furries to like animals, and liking animal designs doesn't make people furries. It should be more about just having fun that tossing around labels. Furries aren't bad either, it's just a veeeeeeeeeeery big group that has a lot of people in it, and there's bound to be a lot of different stuff in a group as large as that. Yeah I don't exactly tolerate everything and a good handful of others don't either, but overall I'd love for the name to not be as tainted as it was, and be more referred to as a fun open kind group who just like and enjoy the aesthetics of animal characters

  • i haven't even watch the video yet but yes technically a crab "fursona" is a furry, though it might be more apt to be called an Anthro. carapace-y does sound cool though sljdfnlsjls i love Jane's fursona, very cool vibes. love jack's fursona being able to move tectonic plates, king shit. also looks really cool 5:00 anthropomorphizing is literally just giving human traits to an animal (or an inanimate object or plant or what have you). this is the whole "is the brave little toaster a furry?" i don't think he is. but he is an anthropomorphized toaster. humans have been projecting, for lack of a better word, onto creatures and things for a long long long time. giving anthro features to an animal does not a furry make, necessarily. Is Snoopy a furry? maybe. he's a dog that walks upright and has human behaviors. this answer is a little long winded, but is just to say, anthro qualities does not a furry make, but are necessary to have a furry. like. it can't be a furry without some kind of anthro quality. whether that be visual or characteristic. the rabbits in Watership Down are anthropomorphized, but whether they're furries is more up to interpretation. 14:00 yeah you definitely don't need to sexualize the design for it to be a furry. there are a huge amount of sexual and or sensual furry designs. and there are just as many not sexual or sensual. it's there, it's just not the only thing. 18:00 there is a whole documentary on the history and present of the furry community. it's on youtube, it's free. it's incredibly well done. and yes, furries, as a community, have existed, as we know them, since about the 80's? maybe earlier. 19:42 "can furries have pets?" yes. the context of the world is important though. a friend of mine has their headworld where it's like. animals are people. and there's humans too. who are also people. and then there's just like. regular animals.

  • I'll admit I kinda love that the gang is having a more precise discussion about what qualifies a character as furry than the entire fandom For most us it's like Lion king, aka feral animals that speaks? Sure Beastars, mostly human bodytypes with fur and animal heads? Check Zootopia with animal anatomy adapted to a bipedal stance? Oh I don't even have to say it There is an immense range of style of characters, with or without clothes, standing on all 4 or not Honestly for us it's mostly like "It's an animal? It has human-like intelligence? Ok that's all we need", everything else is just details and preferences Also I'll say it here Liking zootopia, or beastars, or anything else with talking animals does not "make you a furrry", nothing "makes" people a furry, it's a personal choice, period, you can enjoy all kind of animal based media without being interested in the community, just as how you can be a furry without having a fursona

  • You could still give your crabsona a mohawk if you gave it crustacean spikes going down its head

  • I remember on an episode of Doodle Doods, Ross said that since a crab is a crustacean, people who had a crabsona or lobstersona they'd be called Crusties.

  • There is definitely a spectrum to furrydom. Like a talking bunny that hops around doing bunny things is not a furry (think Watership Down.) A talking bunny that has some human characteristics, like wearing clothes or walking on 2 legs, but still mostly looks like a bunny is half furry (think Peter Rabbit.) A talking bunny that has very human proportions and lives in a very human-like society is a furry (think Judy Hops.) I've been a furry for 10ish years so I hope this helps
